What Foods to Eat in Athens, Greece? What Did We Try?

Hello, I’m writing today’s content for those who have questions like ‘I’m going to Athens, Greece, what should I eat there? How much does an average meal cost in Greece? What are the typical Greek dishes? Which dishes are famous in Athens, Greece? How much does each dish cost, like a coffee or a pizza?’

1.Gyros (Greek Wrap):

Anyone coming to Greece must try Gyros. After reading articles and hearing recommendations about how Gyros should definitely be eaten in Greece, we decided to give it a try. While wandering around, we saw a crowded shop and decided to see what it was. We noticed the super long but equally fast-moving line for Gyros, and we joined the queue.

We had our Gyros at Tylixto, and it was truly satisfying and delicious. Probably, all kinds of Gyros are constantly being prepared in the background and quickly served to the next customers. Because as soon as you say what you want to eat, they deliver it so quickly that it seems impossible to prepare it in that time. But I can’t describe how hot it was; even eating it right away was challenging. Gyros was checked off the list as soon as we tasted it, considering Greek cuisine.

So, what is Gyros? Should I call it a wrap or pita? It’s a flavor where you choose what ingredients to put in such a product. I’m sharing photos of what we ate. We had Gyros twice from the same place, and I recommend it to anyone going there. It’s a 10/10 product in terms of price performance. I’m sharing the price list below, the average price range for Gyros is between €3.70 – €4.40. I was satisfied with one Gyros, but I saw others who ate two.

2.Our go-to place for breakfast:
“Cafe Veneti, Beneth”

While heading from our accommodation in Athens to Monastiraki Square, we passed by Cafe Veneti, Beneth in Omonia almost every day. On the first day, we thought there might be something good here. In the following days, we bought a couple of sandwiches and snacks to test, and we fell in love with it.

Inside Cafe Veneti, Beneth, there are various tempting sweets, breakfast items, cookies, and all imaginable bakery products. They make everything themselves. They also serve hot dishes at lunchtime.

Before starting our sightseeing tours, we chose their filter coffees for our morning wake-up sessions. It was so delicious that we couldn’t resist asking if we could buy this coffee for our home. Because there were large coffee packages behind the counter. We could buy them, and I’m glad we did. I still use it, and the smell of the coffee is amazing.

On the last day before leaving, we decided to stop by one last time and buy what we wanted. I noticed the section with jams, and I bought 3-4 jams, especially loved the orange jam. Unfortunately, my orange jam is finished, but if anyone goes to Athens and wants to bring me some, I can’t say no.

I don’t know if I will go to Athens again, but if I do, I will definitely go back to Cafe Veneti, Beneth.

3.Let’s get lost in the charming streets of Plaka: Yiasemi

I’m very happy to have discovered a cute street from the first day, Yiasemi. They say anyone going to Greece should try Alfa beer. In our first explorations, we happened to find the sweet street where Yiasemi is located, and we said, let’s sip a cold beer right here. Whether you prefer Yiasemi or another place can vary, but I strongly recommend going to the street where Yiasemi is located. An Alfa beer was €4.5. I took a photo of the menu to give you an idea about the prices, and I’m sharing it below.

If you have any recommendations from Athens, I’m waiting for them in the comments.

with love,
Irem
